# Device activation

Activating a device links it to your Vizito account, so it can sign visitors in and out for your company. Do this once per device, right after you install the app. You can link as many devices to one account as you like.

The device shows a **device token** of six characters, and that token is only valid for about a minute. Open the backoffice on your computer first, so you can enter the token as soon as the device shows it.

1. Sign in to the [Vizito backoffice](https://backoffice.vizito.be/) on your computer, go to **Account settings > Devices** in the menu and click **Add a device**. The device points you to `vizito.be/activate`, which is a shortcut to the same dialog.

2. Open the Vizito app on the device and tap **I have a Vizito account**.

This screen is in the language of the device itself, not of your Vizito account: the device does not know which account it belongs to yet. It switches to your account’s language once it is linked.

3. Read the six-character device token from the device screen. The line underneath counts down how long it stays valid.

4. Type the token your device is showing into the **Device token** field, then click the green **Add a device** button.

    ![vizito add device](https://vizito.eu/faq/get-started/device-activation/vizito-add-devices.webp?width=900)

5. Click **Close** on the “This device has now been linked to your account.” message.

    ![device linked confirmation](https://vizito.eu/faq/get-started/device-activation/device-linked-confirmation.webp?width=900)

6. Wait for the device to refresh. It reloads by itself and shows the visitor sign-in screen.

If the token runs out before you have entered it, the device replaces it with “Token expired, try again by clicking on the button below.” Tap **Try again** to get a fresh token. The expired one no longer works, so always enter the token that is on the screen at that moment.

The device is now listed under **Account settings > Devices**, on a card showing its platform, its Vizito version and a **Since** timestamp. Click **Edit** on that card to open **Device configuration**, where you can give the device a name.

### Why does the tablet not show my changes?

A change you save in the backoffice reaches the tablet by itself. Settings that belong to the location, such as hosts, visit types, sign-in fields, agreements and the emergency message, are pushed to every device of that location the moment you save them. Settings of the device itself, which you change under **Account settings > Devices > Edit**, make that one device reload. On top of that, the app re-reads the settings of the location every time it returns to the welcome screen.

If the backoffice shows the change and the tablet does not:

1. Tap **Sign In** on the tablet and then **Back**. Returning to the welcome screen re-reads the settings, which is enough in nearly every case.
2. Check that you edited the right location. Hosts, visit types and everything else under **Account settings** are per location. If your account has several locations, the button in the top bar of the backoffice names the one you are editing: see [Manage locations](https://vizito.eu/faq/account/manage-locations/). A tablet only shows the hosts of the location it was activated in.
3. Check that the tablet is online. The push only arrives while the tablet is connected. Once it is back online, return to the welcome screen as in step 1.
4. Close the app completely and open it again. That reloads everything from scratch.

You do not need to activate the device again. Removing and re-adding a device only helps when the device is no longer listed under **Account settings > Devices** at all, and it does not bring settings across that the steps above did not.

### Show only some visit types on a tablet

A visit type is not bound to one tablet by itself: every tablet of the location offers every visit type. If a tablet at the goods entrance should only offer “Delivery” and “Contractor”, limit it per device.

1. Select **Account settings > Devices** in the left menu and click **Edit** on the card of the tablet. **Device configuration** opens.

2. Under **Visit types**, select the visit types this tablet may offer. Leave the field empty and the tablet offers all of them.

![the Visit types field in Device configuration](https://vizito.eu/faq/get-started/device-activation/device-visit-types.webp?width=900)

3. Click **Save**. The tablet reloads by itself.

The same window holds **Entry point**, shown once the location has more than one entry point, which tags every sign in on this tablet with the entrance it stands at, and **Welcome screen buttons**, which shows both buttons, only “Sign In” or only “Sign Out” on this device. See [Entry points](https://vizito.eu/faq/general/entry-points/). The visit type itself keeps its full configuration; a visitor who wants a visit type that this tablet hides walks to a tablet that offers it, or signs in on their phone.

### Device activation troubleshooting

**The token does not work or is not accepted**

- “Token expired, try again by clicking on the button below.” means the six-character token ran out. Tap **Try again** and enter the new one within a minute.
- The token has to be entered in the location the tablet belongs to. In an account with several locations, check the name in the top bar of the backoffice before you click **Add a device**.

**The tablet shows the welcome screen again after it was activated**

This is the tablet having lost its link to your account, and there are five usual causes:

- **The device was removed in the backoffice.** Deleting a device under **Account settings > Devices** tells the tablet to wipe itself and go back to the welcome screen. Activate it again.
- **Browser data was cleared.** A browser kiosk keeps its activation in the browser’s site data. Clearing the cache, cookies or site data, or an extension or policy that does so on a schedule, removes it. Exclude frontoffice.vizito.be from that cleanup, or use the iPadOS or Android app, which keeps the activation in the app.
- **A device management policy wiped the app.** MDM profiles that reset apps overnight, re-install them or clear their storage remove the activation with it. Ask whoever manages the tablets to exempt the Vizito app.
- **The app was uninstalled and reinstalled.** A fresh install is a new device to Vizito; activate it again and remove the old card under **Devices**.
- **The tablet was replaced or restored from a backup** of another tablet. Same answer: activate it again.

**The tablet goes dark, locks or shows a login screen**

- **Auto-lock.** Set the tablet never to lock: on an iPad under Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock, on Android under Display > Screen timeout, and switch on **Keep tablet awake** under **Account settings > General > Advanced settings**. To dim the screen outside opening hours, use [Energy saving](https://vizito.eu/faq/account/energy-saving/).
- **Battery optimisation on Android** stops the app after a while in the background or when the screen is off. Exclude Vizito from battery optimisation (Settings > Apps > Vizito > Battery), and keep the tablet on power.
- **Kiosk mode.** Use Guided Access on iPadOS or a kiosk app on Android so visitors cannot leave the app. See [iPadOS kiosk mode](https://vizito.eu/faq/get-started/ios-kiosk/) and [Android kiosk mode](https://vizito.eu/faq/get-started/android-kiosk/).

**Network messages**

- “Your tablet is offline. Check the network settings and try again.” and “Please check this device’s internet connection and try again.” mean the tablet cannot reach frontoffice.vizito.be. Open a browser on the tablet and go to [vizito.eu](https://vizito.eu/). If that works but the app does not, a proxy or a captive portal is in the way. See [Network requirements](https://vizito.eu/faq/get-started/network-requirements/).
- A tablet that keeps dropping off a Wi-Fi network at the edge of its range shows the same messages now and then and recovers by itself. Move the access point or the tablet.

**“Your trial has expired. Please purchase a plan!”**

The account’s trial has ended. Subscribe under **Administration > Billing** and the tablet resumes without re-activation. See [Billing](https://vizito.eu/faq/account/billing/).

If none of this applies, remove the app completely, install it again, activate it, and contact us through the chat in the backoffice with the message the tablet shows.
